Take a photo of the old lamp's base and the lamp holder. Check the markings on the fitting itself. Most fixtures have a sticker or stamp with the maximum wattage and base type. If it says “12V 8W GU5.3,” you're halfway there. If it says “230V GU10,” you don't need a separate driver at all.
Why does this matter? Because a 12V circuit with the wrong bulb can turn a five-minute swap into a rewire.
Step 2: Identify whether you need a driver or a transformer
“Driver” gets used loosely. When someone asks me for a “driver LED” for a Toshiba spotlight, my first question is: which driver? On a 12V MR16-style spotlight, the power supply is often an electronic transformer or a constant-voltage power supply, and the bulb has its own built-in driver circuitry. A Toshiba 12V 8W bulb with the right base will often fit a 12V halogen fixture. But fit isn't the same as a safe thermal match. If the old can is tightly enclosed, check the bulb's datasheet for minimum clearances. Not ideal? No. But better than a flickering light or a failed driver in a ceiling void.

Second, keep old drivers for a week after the job. If the new driver fails, you'll want to compare behavior instead of pulling specs from a photo. Third, be honest about disposal. According to the FTC Green Guides (ftc.gov, 16 CFR Part 260), if you claim a product or component is “recyclable,” that claim needs to be accurate in the local area. Some municipal e-waste programs accept LED drivers and bulbs; some don't. Check before promising a client “easy recycling.”
