How a Restaurant Retrofit Taught Me to Buy Toshiba Downlight Bulbs and Smart Downlights

The call that started it

A Tuesday morning in March 2024. I was reviewing invoices when the phone buzzed. It was the owner of a restaurant group I've worked with for six years. The dining room lights were flickering, one prep station was dark, and the under-cabinet lights in the bar sounded like a dying fluorescent.

The Toshiba smart downlight decision

I chose Toshiba for the smart downlights because the spec sheet was honest. It listed compatible hubs (Zigbee and WiFi), the required driver model, and beam angle. That level of detail is rare.

Still, we had one confusing moment. The electrician texted, 'Need the toshiba bluetooth driver for the smart downlight.' It is not, once you factor in an older building, a tiled backsplash, and the local electrical code.

We hired a licensed electrician. The steps look simple: turn off power, run the cable, mount a driver, connect the fixture, test the switch. In practice, the cable route took two hours because the top cabinets had a steel support beam behind the drywall. The driver had to be accessible, which meant cutting a small access panel. The labor for that part alone was $850.

There is an old assumption that smart downlights always need a neutral wire and a licensed electrician no matter what. Some do. Some don't. The belief comes from the early days of smart switches, when neutral wires were almost always required. Now, a number of smart downlights are designed for retrofit housings, but you still need to check the spec sheet before ordering.

What the final numbers looked like

Final cost for this project: $5,100 for the Toshiba downlight bulbs, 16 smart downlights with drivers, and trim package. $850 for the under-cabinet fixtures and materials. $1,700 for the electrician. Total: $7,650. This was a March 2024 project, so verify current pricing.

If we had gone with the 'low quote' vendor, we would have paid at least $1,100 more. The missing drivers, trims, handling fee, and a second labor visit would have eaten any savings. The transparent quote was not the cheapest on paper. It was the cheapest after the work started.

I also checked the energy numbers before approving. According to the U.S. Department of Energy (energy.gov), LEDs use at least 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs. ENERGY STAR says a qualifying LED downlight lasts 15,000 hours or more (energystar.gov). Those facts made the upfront cost easier to justify.

The part I keep telling myself

If I had to compress this into one sentence, it would be: the price on the quote is not the price of the project. I now start every lighting conversation with 'What's not included?' I keep a running list of driver models, housing sizes, and cross-reference numbers. When a vendor answers those questions quickly, they are telling you something important. When they avoid the questions, that is also information.

At one point I had to price a small TV for the staff room. I typed 'toshiba led tv 32 inch price in india' into a search engine and got a clear price. No 'call for price.' No separate handling fee. That is the same pricing behavior I want from a lighting supplier.
