Can succulents grow in office light?
Last fall, an office manager sent me that question while planning a break room refresh. I nearly said yes because a succulent is a plant and an office has light. Then I looked at my own desk. For an office, the correct light is comfortable for people. For a plant, the correct light is bright enough and stays on long enough. For an LED fixture, the correct light depends on a driver that delivers the right current without flicker, over-temperature, or control mismatch. The visible fixture is only half the answer.
What I recommend now
My process is not complicated. It is just earlier than most buying decisions:
- Start with the failure, not the model number. Write down what the light does that it should not do, such as blinking, humming, or staying dim.
- Take a photo of the driver label and, if possible, the LED module label. If the label is burned, trace it to the original fixture spec.
- List the control system: dimmer, switch, sensor, Zigbee/WiFi gateway, or emergency circuit. Then compare the driver compatibility list against that.
- When the quote says compatible, ask the supplier to show the matching part number in the manufacturer documentation.
