If the ceiling contains standard recessed housings with screw-in retrofit bulbs, keep the branch circuit parallel. The phrase “wire in series” does not apply to those bulbs.
1. Read the Driver Label Like It Is the Only Source of Truth
Before you search for another “Toshiba driver download,” pull down the ceiling access panel, bring a flashlight, and photograph the actual driver. Most drivers have a label with two critical values: output current in milliamps and output voltage range. If the output says “700 mA,” the replacement driver must say 700 mA. If the output says “12V DC” instead, that is a constant-voltage system, and you should wire the system in parallel, not in series.

3. Wire the Modules in One Continuous Loop
Follow the manufacturer’s diagram if you can read it. The usual series order is:
- Turn off the breaker and verify power is off with a rated voltage tester.
- Connect the driver’s positive output wire to the first module’s positive input.
- Connect the first module’s negative output to the second module’s positive input.
- Continue this pattern until the last module.
- Connect the last module’s negative output to the driver’s negative output.
- Turn the power back on only after all connections are secured in approved junction boxes.
Loose connections are the quiet killers in a series string. If one module loses connection, the whole string will not work.
4. Keep Red Spotlights and Chandelier Lamps Out of the String
A red spotlight can look great in an accent area, but it is not automatically compatible with a recessed downlight series string. It may use a different current, a different forward voltage, or a separate line-voltage transformer. If you are replacing a burned-out red spotlight bulb, trace it back to its own power source before treating it like a modular downlight.
Chandelier lamps also belong in their own circuits. A chandelier lamp with a candelabra base is typically a line-voltage lamp and should not be connected to a constant-current string. If the chandelier is an LED fixture, it will have its own integral driver. Do not combine it with recessed modules just because the wires are nearby.
5. Test Before Closing the Ceiling
Once the string is wired, restore power and look at every module. They should be similar in brightness. A single dim module usually means a bad connection or a polarity mistake. Turn power off before touching the connections. If everything looks right, label the driver with the date, fixture IDs, and the driver part number; future you will appreciate it.
Honestly, I am not sure why more fixture manufacturers do not print a simple wiring diagram on the driver cover. My best guess: they assume the installer already knows and only looks at the label when something is wrong. That assumption creates a lot of unnecessary service calls.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
The first mistake is looking for a downloadable software file when the fixture is dark. A “Toshiba printer driver download” page will not help a downlight.
