But I won't oversell it. Driver replacement is not a nice DIY project for everyone. The housing might not have a removable driver. The driver might be glued or molded in. In that case, fixture replacement is the honest answer. No shame in that.
This is where the "no best choice" principle applies. I recommend driver-first thinking for projects where you have enough information, access to the driver, and a clear compatibility map. If you don't have those three things, fixture replacement is probably the right call.
When This Advice Doesn't Apply
I can only speak to B2B work—mid-size orders, office and hospitality retrofits, predictable inventory. If you're a homeowner doing a single recessed light, the decision tree is different. Your labor cost and time may make fixture replacement more attractive. If you're working with an old installation where the wiring is unknown, driver replacement includes risk that a new fixture might not have.
And I'll add an honest data gap: I don't have hard numbers on driver failure rates by brand or by operating hours. I wish I had tracked that more carefully. What I can say anecdotally is that quality issues seem to cluster in the first few weeks after installation, not after years of use. So buy from brands with solid support. Stop starting your lighting spec with the bulb. Start with the driver. The bulb is what you see; the driver is what you rely on.
If you're speccing LED panels, recessed downlights, or a smart lighting upgrade, ask these questions first:
- What voltage and current does the driver deliver?
- Is the driver replaceable, or is it integrated into the fixture?
- Does the driver support the control protocol you need (Bluetooth Zigbee, 0-10V, DALI)?
- Is the driver IP rating appropriate for the location?
These questions cost nothing. Missing them cost me $18,000.
